Signing Up for Your First Ironman

After much deliberation of where to focus my time, money and effort, I am happy to announce that I have registered for my very first Ironman!  Let’s face it.  It’s only natural for someone to hesitate taking on such a challenge, especially if you’re into triathlon, because no triathlete gives anything half their best; it’s a long, hard road that most people take on, not because they have to, but because they want to; that’s what makes this sport so beautiful.

Am I nervous about what I signed up for?  Of course!  Every time I finish a half, exhausted and with an empty tank, I can’t imagine having done the course twice.  So, is the timing right for me to sign up for Ironman?  Well, from a triathlon perspective, I have a lot of experience with the half distance (I have done 8 of them and 5 of them were in 2015), I have been with my coach for a year now, so I trust him to help get me there healthy and strong, and I also have a huge support system of friends and family to help me through the tired and frustrating times; so I am set to go there.  From a more personal perspective, I have a lot going on in my life. I just moved across the country, I just became a dog mom (seriously, sometimes it’s like having a child), and I am planning our wedding that will take place at the end of the next triathlon season, among other things.  Maybe not the most perfect timing in that respect, but the truth is, we all have a lot going on in our lives and it’s never going let up.  But we make the things we love part of our lifestyle and we make it work.  And for that reason, I could not be more excited about signing up for the 2016 Ironman Boulder!

I’m not only buzzing with excitement for my new challenge, but also because Kona happenings are underway!  I get chills every time I watch the coverage for the Ironman World Championship; the history of it, the strength and courage it requires; not to mention the mental fortitude; it’s all truly special and extremely inspiring. I hope to compete and experience it myself at some point, but for now, I will follow along with Ryan and Jacqui Giuliano!  Both are racing in Kona next weekend, so be sure to check for race updates on the EGO pb Sammy’s Facebook page. Good luck Ryan and Jacqui!
